How Art Journaling Can Help You!

How can art journaling help you get started in art? I’ll try to explain and also inform you how it could help you with anxiety, depression, and stress!

Note: I’ve started to only use a pencil, for the original drawing. Then I use the pens to cover the pencil lines. Then the fun begins with the filling in with gel pens!

Supplies to get you started.

  • A waterproof journal. (Wal-Mart, Amazon, Or any place that sells art supplies)
  • Markers. You can either use ink or spend a little more and get acrylic pens. I’m thinking you should start with a variety of colored pens. Not pencils, unless that’s what you prefer.
  • Crayola Markers (Great for when the mood hits for you to color what you draw)
  • Acrylic Paints (Go to Wal Mart and buy all the colors of the rainbow if you want!)
  • Gesso (I’ll explain what this is in a bit)

Getting Started (Art Journal Basic 101)

I’m going to explain how I started all my journals. Hopefully, this will give you an idea of how to start and never stop doing it!!

When I sit down and get very comfy on my couch with my journal, pens, inks, paints, etc. I NEVER, EVER have an idea of what I want to put on a page. I just put a little mark on the page, and let my imagination run free!! (I’ll post pics)

Doing this helps me when I paint as well. I have come up with a lot of my paintings from what I put on my journal. I draw from it to put it to the canvas!

For me, doing an art journal is where I learned to paint. Way back when! This helps my imagination and lets it run free. What I’m calling an art journal for way back when, basically was a whole lot of doodling!

Of course, I’m a right-brainer, so I draw from my imagination a lot for a lot of things besides paintings! (The word right-brainer is my own word and I claimed it in other blogs) LOL

Colored Pens

The above image is the pens I use for my journal. All the colors of the rainbow and then some. I bought these at Wal-Mart. They didn’t cost very much. Now, the below picture of the Posca Pens is another story. They are Acrylic Paint Pens. A little pricey!

Great for small lines when painting!

You can find everything you need at Amazon of course. But use a local art store if you live near one!

BUT, I do have a store on Amazon and the above link is the best way to find me!

And Now About Gesso

Now to explain what Gesso is and why you should use it if you’re going to apply paint in your journal.

Gesso is an acrylic undercoat. It helps the paint stick better to a canvas. I also use it to coat my journals if I plan on using any acrylic paint in the journal. It’s like a protective layer to keep the paint from bleeding through to the other pages.

Just A Little More Helpful Info About Doing A Journal

S0, now that I’ve shown you and explained a little about journaling, let me explain how it can help you to relieve anxiety, depression, and stress! Believe me, I’ve suffered from all 3! And it was horrible and if you’re going through any of it, I can totally understand you!!

I’ve explained in earlier blogs about my brain being messed up and how painting brought me back to life. That wasn’t an exaggeration! I had painted for many years before all the brain damage and had to quit for a long time because of it.

In 2018, I decided that I needed to pick my brushes back up and give painting another go. And, I’ve NOT looked back since. I no longer have anxiety. No longer binge shop for BS stuff to satisfy whatever I thought was missing in my life!

I’ve started journaling again, and, I’m telling ya… It’s wonderful to not have those weird feeling’s like I used to have. ART brought me back to life and a good life!!!

And That’s The Gist Of It!

That’s it for this blog guys! I have more information coming in future blogs. PLEASE feel free to leave a comment or contact me about anything that I’ve talked about in my blogs!!

Having an art journal or journaling, in general, is a great way to help you mentally relax or relieve anxiety and stress. Give it a try and see what it does for you. Leave me a comment and let me know how it goes!
